Here's a run down about how to make a wonderful, classic salad nicoise. Enjoy.

How To Go About Making A Salad Nicoise

A Salad Nicoise is more commonly referred to as a Nicoise Salad with the Nicoise being pronounced as "ni-suaz". This particular salad originates from the Nice region of France and consists of a number of different ingredients the details of which we provide below. However there are some restaurants which although offer a Salad Nicoise it is not what would be considered to be the classic version. Often they will include rice, potatoes, pasta, cheese or cooked vegetables into their recipe.

But the real beauty of this salad is that not only is relatively easy to prepare and make but the way in which the ingredients are presented. Not only does it contain lots of color and texture but it is full of flavors which combine well together. Below we list the ingredients as well as provide step by step instructions so that you can have a go at making this particular salad for yourself.

So that you can make this salad for four people you will need to get the following ingredients together:- 1. 10 ripe and large tomatoes 2. A clove of garlic 3. A large cucumber 4. A green and red pepper 5. 6 spring (green) onions 6. Anchovy Fillets (12) which have been kept in olive oil 7. 1/2 Cup (4.5 ounces) of black olives 8. 4 eggs which need to be hard boiled 9. 1/3 cup (3 fluid ounces) of extra virgin olive oil 10. 1 tbspn (15ml) of red wine vinegar 11. Juice from a lemon (These last three ingredients will be used to make the dressing for the salad) 12. Salad Leaves (a number of different varieties such as cos, arugula or rocket are ideal) as well as a good handful of fresh basil. After getting all the ingredients together you now need to start preparing and making your salad. Follow our step by step guide to try making this great tasting salad for yourself.

Step 1 - First get the ten tomatoes and cut these each into six pieces. Place on a dish and sprinkle with a little salt and allow them to stand for about 30 minutes in order that the juice in them can drain out. As you start to prepare the tomatoes you can put the eggs onto boil. In order to produce really good hard boiled eggs it is best if you allow them to stay in the water for around 5 minutes.

Step 2 - Now take the cucumber and cut this in half along the entire length of it. Once cut in half you now need to scoop out as many of the seeds inside then you can slice up the cucumber. However you should not either peel the cucumber of slice it too thinly. Then after preparing the cucumber you can move on to preparing the peppers and the spring onions. Both of the peppers and spring onions should be very thinly sliced.

Step 3 - Take the garlic clove remove the outer layer and then cut this in half and rub them around the inside of your salad bowl. If you are able to use a wooden bowl for placing the salad in.

Step 4 - As soon as you are ready to serve the salad, take your salad leave and lay these over the base of the bowl. The tomatoes that you left to drain can now be used and laid on top of the leaves along with the hard boiled eggs, which have been cut, into quarters. Then onto this, you need to place the peppers, spring onions and cucumber, as well as the anchovy fillets, which should have been drained. Then over the top, you scatter the olives.

Step 5 - The final thing you need to do before you can serve the Salad Nicoise to family or guests is make the dressing. In order to do this you take the lemon juice, olive oil and red wine vinegar and place in a bowl or jar before adding a small amount of freshly ground black pepper and salt to season. Once all the ingredients are together mix until well combined and then very slowly drizzle it over the salad. Finally take the fresh basil leaves and tear them up into pieces and sprinkle over the top of the salad. It really is that simple to make a great tasting Nicoise Salad.

Not all cutlery is the same, by any means. Prices vary all over the map. A knife that costs a lot isn't necessarily one that'll do the best job. And, it's a given that knives which aren't maintained in good condition will be difficult to use, even if they're top of the line. Having the right knives and keeping them in the best possible shape is an important part of running things efficiently and avoiding accidents in the kitchen. We came accross the article below which mentions a number of things to keep in mind when choosing a cutlery set.

The Qualities of Good Cutlery Sets

It seems that everyone is selling cutlery sets, from your friends to infomercial outlets. Some of the knife sets may be perfectly fine, while others are not worth the box they are packed in. To find out if the cutlery sets are all you want them to be, consider a few pointers.

First, the best cutlery sets have a nice variety of knives. A Chef’s knife is very versatile, and can be used for a large variety of tasks, cutting up and slicing just about any type of food. Bread knives with a serrated edge work better at slicing loaves without crushing them. Santoku knives are similar to narrow bladed cleavers, and they are good for chopping, mincing, and slicing. A paring knife is handy for peeling fruits and vegetables. It also can be used to cut fruits and vegetables into smaller pieces. A filet or boning knife is good to have if you cut up whole chickens or fish. Do not forget the steak knives. Most good cutlery sets have 4 to 8 steak knives included.

Second, good cutlery sets will be made with quality construction methods. Stainless steel is the metal of choice for most cutlery sets, with high carbon steel being the best. Full tang blades are nice to have because they are durable and cut smoothly. Full tang just means that the metal that forms the blade continues down through to the end of the handle. Metal rivets are sometimes used to hold the knives together securely. Ergonomic handles are preferable, especially if you spend a lot of time in the kitchen.

Finally, consider the knife accessories that come with the cutlery sets. Kitchen shears come in handy not only for opening bags and containers, but also for cutting foods. Most cutlery sets will come with either a knife storage block or individual knife covers. While some knives are made to hold a constant edge, others need routine sharpening maintenance. Having a good sharpening steel for these sets is a good idea to keep the knives sharp between professional sharpenings.

When you have found good quality cutlery sets for your kitchen, you will be ready to handle any recipe. Your food will look better, and in some cases, even taste better. What is more, slicing, chopping and dicing will be a joy instead of drudgery. Look for the best cutlery sets, and you will be happy with your choice.

The most expensive knife isn’t necessarily the best or sharpest. If you don’t keep your knives up in good condition, they won’t be easy to cook with, no matter how costly they were. It’s vital to have the right knives and be able to make sure they’re in good shape, if you want to have an efficient kitchen and avoid accidents.

Get a Good Chef's Knife

Make sure that you have a quality chef's knife - the one blade every cook should have. This is a large handled knife with a blade that starts out wide near the base. It then tapers to a point. This is the knife you'll use for the majority of your cutting in the kitchen. Since chef's knives are so versatile, a full knife set isn't really worth the cost. Investing in a single, high quality chef's knife and keeping it very sharp will serve you better in the long run.

Remember that not every chef's knife is the same. These blades come in many different sizes, and are measured by the length of the blade. Don't get one that's too small - the smallest knife you should buy for all purpose use is around eight inches long, not including the handle. Small knives may seem safer or easier to use, but that's not always true. Large knives can be used to cut small things, but the reverse doesn't work.

The variety of knives can be bewildering, since even an eight inch chef’s knife comes in examples between fifteen and a hundred and fifty dollars. Look for a knife that’s around twenty-five dollars if you’re on a budget, but more money can get you a more attractive knife. A significant overhang below the handle will help you keep it sharp.

Cost vs. Sharpness

You might have heard that a costly knife will hold it's edge longer. That's not really true. Good steel does keep an edge better than the cheapest metal, but cutting any sturdy root vegetable will cause the edge to go out of true. It doesn't matter if you're using a mediocre knife or one that's top of the line. To help fix this, use a steel to straighten the edge on a daily basis. Steels are the long sticks you've probably seen with knife sets, and are traditionally made from steel. However, many are not ceramic or diamond. Using a steel is just a matter of swiping it down the side of the knife at a twenty degree angle, but this takes some experience. For those who aren't comfortable with this process, there are also a few easier options.

Sharpening

A knife and tool sharpener, which has a built in angle, will help you straighten a knife without a lot of skill. Hold the knife with the edge up, and the tip hanging off the counter’s edge. Swipe your sharpener over the edge a few times, and the blade will be a lot sharper. Remember that this kind of sharpener slowly eats away at the blade, and will shorten its life. However, a sharp knife for a shorter time is better than one that is always dull. This is worth keeping in mind if you’re unable to have your knives sharpened professionally and aren’t comfortable with a steel.

However you choose to keep your knives sharp, wash and dry them before and after you sharpen. Once you get used to having your knives sharp, it'll be easy to tell when the edge is going. Cutting will be a lot harder, especially on tough things. Want to test it? Slide the knife along the skin of a tomato or a peach, but don't press down. Sharp knives will cut in right away.

A knife should always be treated carefully if you want to preserve its edge. Never use cutting boards of glass, granite, or other hard materials. Wood and plastic are better. The edge should be preserved from damage by immediate washing and drying after use. Store your knife somewhere out of the way of other dishes, so it'll stay in good shape.

Regardless of how you sharpen your knives, be sure to wash and dry them both before and after sharpening. Once you get used to having a sharp knife, you’ll know right away when yours is losing its edge. Suddenly, cutting becomes a lot more difficult. One easy test is sliding your knife along a peach or tomato, exerting no pressure. If the knife is sharp, it’ll pierce the skin right away.

This is just an introduction to the advantages of sharpening and caring for kitchen cutlery. Read on for some more recommendations.

Sharpening Knives and Other Tips for Caring for Your Kitchen Knives

Owning a set of kitchen knives, regardless of their type, requires certain use and maintenance in order to keep them sharp and working correctly. Whether you invested in quality kitchen knives or own a set of discount knives, you will want to keep them sharp and handling well.

The first rule of use for your kitchen knife is to be sure that your blade lands on a soft surface, such as wood or plastic, instead of a hard surface like ceramic or metal. Striking your kitchen cutlery against hard surfaces will rapidly dull the blade and hinder the performance of your kitchen knife, even if you are using high quality ceramic or stainless steel cutlery.

It’s sometimes tempting to use the kitchen knife to pry something, use it as a screwdriver or chisel and many other actions for which the kitchen cutlery is not intended. Even using the handle of your knife as a hammer is not recommended, unless it is specifically built for that task. The pins, springs and handle can loosen or break, rendering your kitchen knife useless.

You should keep your kitchen cutlery away from sand and gritty materials. Be especially aware when you are using your knives outside, for instance if you are camping, fishing or just barbequing outdoors. Be aware of your kitchen knife and if it gets wet, you should immediately dry it. When you are washing your kitchen cutlery, do so in mild, soapy water and then dry it completely with a towel, instead of allowing it to drip dry. You should always wash your kitchen cutlery by hand and dry it immediately after.

Wood tends to swell, so it you have wooden handled knives, it is best not to immerse them in water for any period of time. You can rub mineral oil on wooden knife handles to help them keep their luster. You can also increase the lifetime of your wooden handled kitchen knives by rubbing lemon oil or furniture polish into the wood handle occasionally.

Stainless steel cutlery should not rust in the humidity and it can withstand acids that it is exposed to in daily use. However, stainless steel does not mean 100 percent rust proof. The coarser the stainless steel surface is, the more likely it is to corrode. To ensure your stainless steel cutlery is corrosion resistant, you want to purchase knives with finely ground or polished surfaces.

Another option for kitchen cutlery is ceramic knives which are durable and long lasting. However, ceramic knives should also not be put in the dishwasher. They are very easy to clean; a wipe and a rinse is all that is needed to keep them in great condition for years to come.

When storing your knives, it is best to choose a knife block to protect the blades. Never put your knife into the wooden knife block wet – wood absorbs water and you could introduce mold and mildew into your knife block which could effectually ruin your kitchen knives. If you are going to keep them in a drawer, be sure that they are not tossed around too much. Jostling against other knives or instruments could cause your knife blades to chip or dull unnecessarily. It is fine to keep them in a drawer, but they should be sleeved or in compartments to avoid colliding with other utensils or inadvertently cutting you as you search in the drawer for the knife you need. Forged cutlery or stainless steel cutlery should be properly stored to ensure it lasts a long time.

Taking care of your kitchen knives is quite easy if you follow the steps outlined above:

- Keep knives out of the dishwasher
- Wash kitchen knives right after use and dry them immediately after washing
- Store them in a wooden knife block, in sleeves or in a compartmentalized drawer

Taking good care of your knives and using them properly will ensure that you will have great kitchen knives for years to come.

Would you think cutlery as it sits in your cutlery drawer could tell something about how organized you are? We came across this story about a lady who was down on herself because she considered her cutlery drawer to be a mess. She took it as evidence that she was unorganized, and that her family was judging her for it. On the other hand, she may not be as unorganized as she thinks. It all depends on how the situation is perceived.

Read on for some insight, and, while you're at it, think about getting some better quality cutlery, since that actually can help make you a better cook, which you and your family will love.

Betty Seeks Organized Living

On the topic of organized living I would like to share with you a story about my friend Betty. This story illustrates the real purpose behind organized living. When people ask the question "How to get organized?" the question reflects an inner feeling of not being in control. The real benefit of organized living is not neatness or tidiness... it is control!

Here is the story of my friend Betty

One day my friend Betty lamented that she was indeed disorganized and that she could use my help.

This statement really surprised me as I had never thought of Betty as being unorganized so I explored this further with her.

Me: "Betty, why do you think you are unorganized?"

Betty: "Oh my cutlery drawer is a mess. My kids tell me nobody has a cutlery drawer like mine. They think there is really some thing wrong with me that I do not fix it up."

Me: "What do you mean your cutlery drawer is a mess?"

Betty: "Well everything is just thrown in there. All the knives and forks and things just in the drawer. My kids get really frustrated with it."

Me: " Do you get frustrated with it Betty?"

Betty: "No. I don't have any problem with it. In fact, somebody gave me one of those drawer organizers once because they thought it needed tidying up and I used it for awhile, but it made me rather anxious every time I looked at it so I stopped using it!"

Me: " I see, so you stopped using the cutlery organizer because it made you feel anxious?"

Betty: "Yes, I think I was just afraid that I would put something in the wrong place, I like it better with everything just jumbled in there. I guess that way I cannot make any mistakes."

Me: " So Betty when you go to get the cutlery to set the table for dinner can you find everything you need?"

Betty: "Yes"

Me: " And how long does it take you to find what you need to set the table?"

Betty: " Just a few seconds....but you should see my underwear box!"

Me: " Your underwear box?"

Betty: "Yes, I do not use a drawer I just have a big chest that I throw all my underwear and socks in. It is all jumbled up!"

Me: " I see. We seem to have a 'jumbled up' theme going on here. Betty do you feel your life is jumbled up?"

Betty: "No!"

Me: "Betty do you feel you have control over your cutlery and your underwear?"

Betty: "Absolutely!"

Me: "And how long does it take you to find your underwear to get dressed in the morning?"

Betty: "Just a few seconds."

Me: " Do you ever feel frustrated because you cannot find the cutlery you need or are you ever late for work because you cannot find the clean underwear you need in your underwear chest?"

Betty: "No to both questions."

Me: "Would you consider your home to be neat and tidy...most of the time"

Betty: "Yes."

Me: "Do you feel in control of your life, even your jumbled up cutlery drawer and underwear chest?"

Betty: "Yes"

Betty was pleased to learn and subsequently tell her children that she is not unorganized. She has a system for controlling her cutlery and her underwear! Just because others could not understand her system does not mean that she is unorganized.

Betty finally realized that she had already achieved organized living even though her children would tell her otherwise.

Betty was in control and would no longer feel compelled to ponder "How to get organized?"

My website http://www.organization-makes-sense.com offers insights into the fundamentals of organized living including one of the three simple truths which is that the goal of organized living is to be in control.

Kitchen cutlery comes in all sizes and shapes. Each small variation results in a different use. There are long ones, short ones, wide ones, narrow ones, curved ones, angled ones and the list goes on and on. They are made from carbon steel, stainless steel, stamped steel, ceramic or even plastic. choosing the correct one can make your kitchen experience enjoyable or an arduous chore.

Opinions, of course, vary all over the map. Here are a few things that will provide you with some orderly direction in choosing kitchen cutlery.

Tips On Choosing Kitchen Cutlery

Purposeful Design

Most quality kitchen cutlery comes in sets because no one knife can do it all. You’re not going to use the same blade to slice bread as you are to slice prime rib, even though they’re both designed for slicing. And you don’t need a cleaver to be as flexible as a filet knife, because they don’t do the same job. Most kitchen cutlery is named after the job they are designed to perform, which will make things easier for you to choose. Make sure the knife fits your hand well and has great balance. The top brands have exceptional balance, which will minimize fatigue and turn a chore into a treat.

Helpful Knowledge

If you know a chef or someone who cooks like one, don’t be afraid to ask them their opinion on their favorite kitchen cutlery. My experiences with German and Japanese blades are extremely favorable. I’ve found their level of quality in both workmanship and materials to be stellar.

Find out how the edge is made on the knife you’re interested in and learn how it works. See what kind of edge works best for the task at hand. Learn about the steel that it’s made from. Cheap steel makes for cheap kitchen cutlery. Some knives are forged and are generally regarded as of a higher quality than those that are stamped from sheets of steel. But today, a high quality stamped blade may be better than a low quality forged one. Put your trust in a company with a great reputation for quality materials and workmanship.

On The Edge

Hollow-ground, serrated, chisel-ground or convex edge, how do you choose your kitchen cutlery? That all depends on what you’re using it for. Most top chefs will tell you that the chisel-ground single-sided edge will cut absolutely the best slices of anything.

Since they are much more economical to mass produce, most kitchen cutlery is either hollow ground or serrated. For most home chefs those two types of edges will do anything and everything they will ever need. To further add to the confusion, many companies now offer kitchen cutlery with super sharp ceramic blades that supposedly never need sharpening. The downside of ceramic is that they are so hard that they can’t easily be sharpened. On the plus side though, they are amazingly sharp, lightweight and they even come in colors. The pluses far outweigh the minuses.

Yes, we’ve all seen TV commercials where some wonderful piece of kitchen cutlery cuts through an aluminum can, but that’s only useful if you eat aluminum cans. You can make cooking into a joy by choosing the proper kitchen cutlery.

Neece, like everyone else, enjoys the finer things in life. She researches and discovers the best things available so you can find the luxuries you deserve as well as gifts for those you love all in one convenient place. http://www.authenticindulgences.com/

Buying the right kitchen cutlery set can be confusing for many of us. Cutting and preparing food with sharp knives makes a world of difference in the difficulty of the task, and in the quality of the outcome. Put simply, having the knife for the the right cut makes for cutting like a professional chef. For all your cutting needs choose the right knife. This article will help you in some way to clear this confusing cutlery shopping.

Cutlery Knife Sets And Pro Knives

Carving the Thanksgiving turkey, cutting the Christmas ham, or just cutting up some summer barbeque, making sure you have the right knife for the job is absolutely essential. Cutlery refers to knives and other cutting instruments used in preparing, serving and eating meals. A carving knife, for example, is a piece of cutlery

History tells us a cutler was a person who made knives, hence the term "cutlery" and its reference predominantly to knives.

Keep in mind the kitchen and the dining room have very distinct requirements but both should require quality cutlery. When cared for properly, a quality set of kitchen knives should last a lifetime. Bear in mind each knife has a particular usage and with so many styles available, there is something for every kitchen setting

Most people select cutlery in classic, readily available designs, that way if one piece is lost, the entire set is not compromised, it can be replaced. If you merely want a durable set of knives for the family, then opting for a strong, no frills stainless steel makes sense.

With that said, it should not be a deterrent to buying quality, stylish and unique cutlery, if you plan to use it for special occasions, you will obviously want something a little more distinctive.

Some cutlery sets simply consist of kitchen knives that have five knives, a sharpening or butcher steel and a basic wooden storage block stand. If needed many stores sell items individually so you can add to your collection as needed.

Some individual knives which can be added to these sets are; a carving knife used primarily for carving and slicing meat, a boning knife; used mainly for de-boning meat or cutting the meat from the bone. Also included are several highly used knives; the chef's knife, paring knife, bread knife, utility knife (for cutting vegetables, fruits and other daily stuff) and possibly a pair of shears,( which serve many uses in food preparation).

Whether you are looking for traditional silver, durable stainless steel or funkier designs that incorporate plastic or glass, there are many choices when it comes to cutlery. You are likely to find something that fits your style and needs.
